Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and 44 different Republicans voted on Tuesday to dismiss the Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump over the riot on the U.S. Capitol earlier this month.
Only 5 Republicans voted with each Democrat to desk Kentucky Sen. Rand (*45*)’s effort to dismiss the trial earlier than it even obtained began. The GOP senator argued that holding such a trial of a former president was not constitutional, though there may be precedent for the Senate attempting former authorities officers.
The Senate rejected (*45*)’s movement in a vote of 55-45. The trial is formally scheduled to start on Feb. 9.
