Cheney will face two Republican contenders within the 2022 major: Wyoming Rep. Chuck Gray and state Sen. Anthony Bouchard.
Cheney was one of 10 Republicans within the House who voted to question Trump over the riot on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. “The oath that I took to the Constitution compelled me to vote for impeachment and … it doesn’t bend to political pressure,” Cheney advised Fox News’ Chris Wallace final month.
She was slammed for her vote by a number of GOP colleagues — and Trump — and censured by Wyoming’s Republican Party. But she simply survived an effort by hard-right Republicans final month to oust her as House Republican Conference chair.
Ryan, who served as speaker from 2015 to 2019, usually clashed with Trump. In January, the previous Wisconsin lawmaker shredded efforts by congressional Republicans to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s win within the presidential election as anti-democratic.
“Efforts to reject the votes of the Electoral College and sow doubt about Joe Biden’s victory strike at the foundation of our republic,” Ryan mentioned in a press release. “It is difficult to conceive of a more anti-democratic and anti-conservative act than a federal intervention to overturn the results of state-certified elections and disenfranchise millions of Americans.”
